Get ready for hacker attacks
You’ve seen the headlines and watched the news stories. In the background, hackers are very busy attempting to gain access to your systems and cause disruptions. You can be prepared if you follow some simple rules:
Get your data backed up
If you haven’t invested in backup hardware/software, now is a very good time to do so. Russia has created malware called HermeticWiper that deletes your data and prevents it from booting. Better have that backup in hand should the worst occur.
Harden your messaging
If you didn’t ask for a message, assume that it’s nefarious until proven otherwise. Clicking a link or opening a file in an email is how it begins. Phishing attacks are the easiest method hackers have of gaining access to your computer. Don’t give them the opportunity to infect your computer with ransomeware/malware.
Ensure your software is up-to-date
Most software will alert you to new updates when they’re available. It’s especially true of security software. Windows and third party developers are hard at work making their products safe. Take advantage of their efforts if you’ve been putting off an update. This includes installing firmware updates on your router. Don’t leave them out of your security regimen.
Two-step authentication
You can pump up your login security with two-step or multifactor authentication. If you’re unfamiliar with the process, during the login procedure you will be sent a code to positively identify yourself as the true owner of the account you’re accessing. Usually this arrives in a text but can also be sent via email or phone call. Financial institutions use this method to protect their customers. If it’s available to you, use it.
